According to Islamic tradition, these springs first emerged when the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his wife Hajar (Hagar) were left alone in the desert with their infant son, Ismail (Ishmael), following God's command. Amidst their desperate search for water, Hajar ran back and forth between two hills, Safa and Marwa, in a quest for help. In response to her unwavering faith, God caused the Zem Zem Springs to sprout from beneath Ismail's feet, offering relief to the family and marking the blessed location.
Today, the Zem Zem Springs are central to the annual Islamic pilgrimage, known as Hajj, during which millions of Muslims flock to Mecca to perform various religious rituals. Pilgrims to the Grand Mosque in Mecca undertake a significant ritual called the Sa'ee, where they reenact Hajar's search for water by walking back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times. As part of this ritual, the pilgrims often drink and collect water from the Zem Zem Springs, considering it a sacred and spiritually purifying resource.
