The superior mesenteric arteries (SMAs) refer to a pair of major blood vessels in the human body that are crucial for the blood supply of the small intestine, cecum, parts of the colon, and the pancreas. They are the primary branches of the abdominal aorta, originating just below the celiac trunk.
The SMAs are responsible for delivering oxygenated blood and vital nutrients to the abdominal organs they supply. They arise from the anterior surface of the abdominal aorta and run downward toward the pelvis, where they branch off into multiple smaller vessels to reach their respective target organs.
These arteries follow a tortuous course through the abdominal cavity, passing posterior to the neck of the pancreas and anterior to the third part of the duodenum. As they descend, they give off numerous branches that supply the small intestine, including the jejunal and ileal arteries. Additionally, the SMAs provide vascular support to the ascending and transverse colon through the right colic and middle colic arteries.
