A simple chancre, also known as a primary syphilis sore or a hard ulcer, is a characteristic manifestation of the initial stage of syphilis infection. It is a painless, circular, firm, and usually solitary sore that forms at the site of entry of the spirochete bacteria, Treponema pallidum. The lesion typically develops on the genitals, anus, or mouth, but can occur anywhere on the body following sexual contact with an infected individual.
The simple chancre usually appears within three weeks of exposure to the bacteria, although the incubation period may range from 10 to 90 days. It begins as a small papule, which later develops into a larger ulcer with a clean base and indurated (hardened) edges. The sore is smooth and may be covered by a crust or scab. The chancre is highly contagious during this stage, and the bacteria can easily be transmitted through direct contact.
If left untreated, the simple chancre will spontaneously heal within four to six weeks, but this does not signify the end of the syphilis infection. Instead, the bacteria enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body, progressing to the secondary stage of the disease. Therefore, it is crucial to seek medical attention as soon as a simple chancre is detected, in order to prevent the further complications and systemic involvement associated with syphilis.
