Plectognathi is a taxonomic order of marine fish belonging to the class Actinopterygii, which encompasses species commonly known as pufferfish, blowfish, or balloonfish. The term "Plectognathi" originates from the Greek words "plekto" meaning "weaver" or "plaited" and "gnathos" meaning "jaw," referring to the unique characteristics of their fused jawbones.
Members of the Plectognathi order are characterized by their distinctive inflated or spiky appearances, which serve as a defense mechanism against predators. These fish have a body covered in tough, spiny skin, and can inflate themselves by taking in water or air, making them difficult to be swallowed by larger predators.
