Etymology of NABOTHIAN GLAND
The term "Nabothian gland" is named after the 17th century Danish anatomist and physician, Peder Schumacher, who was also known by the Latinized name Petrus Severinus. He first described these glands in the cervix of the uterus. However, the word "Nabothian" itself is derived from the biblical figure, Naboth, who is mentioned in the First Book of Kings in the Old Testament. Naboth was an Israelite who owned a vineyard that was coveted by King Ahab of Israel. The king schemed to have Naboth killed so that he could seize his vineyard. In the context of anatomy, the term "Nabothian" was chosen to describe these glands due to their appearance, which resembles small cysts, and is said to resemble the grapes of Naboth's vineyard.
