Mohurrum, also spelled as Muharram, is an important month in the Islamic lunar calendar. It holds great significance for Muslims, particularly for Shia Muslims, as it commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Mohurrum takes place on the first month of the Islamic calendar, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
During Mohurrum, Shia Muslims observe a period of mourning and remembrance, which lasts for ten days, with the peak being on the 10th day known as Ashura. This period is characterized by rituals, processions, and gatherings where believers express grief and sadness over the martyrdom of Imam Husayn and his companions in the tragic Battle of Karbala that took place in 680 CE.
The rituals of Mohurrum vary from culture to culture, but often involve recitations of mourning poems or elegies, known as Majlis, to remember the sacrifices made by Imam Husayn and his loyal followers. Some Shia Muslims engage in chest-beating or self-flagellation as a symbolic representation of grief. Mohurrum is not only a time for mourning but also serves as a reminder of the principles and values that Imam Husayn stood for, including justice, truth, and resistance against tyranny.
