Etymology of MESMERISATION
The word "mesmerisation" is derived from the name of an Austrian physician named Franz Mesmer (1734-1815). Mesmer is known for his controversial theories and practices related to mesmerism, a precursor to hypnosis.
In the late 18th century, Mesmer developed a theory that there exists a natural magnetic force or fluid that flows in and around living organisms, affecting their health and behavior. He claimed to be able to manipulate this force to induce healing and various altered states of consciousness in his patients.
Mesmer's methods involved various techniques such as passing magnets over the body, using suggestive gestures, and creating a relaxing atmosphere. One of his most famous treatments involved "animal magnetism", where he would use his hands to allegedly transfer the magnetic fluid to his patients. This technique became known as mesmerism.
