These insects are typically characterized by their aquatic larvae, which possess segmented bodies and well-developed jaws used for feeding. They undergo complete metamorphosis, meaning they go through distinct stages of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults, on the other hand, are known for their distinctive wing patterns, elongated antennae, and in some species, specialized mandibles.
