Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, commonly known as Carlos the Jackal, is a Venezuelan revolutionary and international terrorist. Born on October 12, 1949, in Caracas, Venezuela, Carlos gained worldwide notoriety and became a symbol of terrorism in the 1970s and 1980s.
Carlos the Jackal was a prominent figure in leftist revolutionary movements, particularly in the radical Marxist organization called the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). He was involved in numerous high-profile attacks across several countries, including the bombing of a Paris store in 1974, the hostage-taking at the 1975 OPEC meeting in Vienna, and the killing of two French policemen and an informant in 1975.
His modus operandi often involved the use of violence and terrorism as a means to achieve political objectives, making him one of the most feared and dangerous terrorists of his time. Carlos was known for his highly organized and sophisticated planning, as well as his ability to elude authorities for many years.
In 1994, Carlos was captured in Sudan by French intelligence agents and was subsequently convicted of multiple terrorist acts, including murder and conspiracy to commit terrorist acts. He is currently serving a life sentence in a French prison.
