The forest tent caterpillar is characterized by its distinct appearance and lifecycle. The caterpillar has a pale blue body covered in long, black hairs and a series of white, keyhole-shaped spots along its sides. It typically grows to a length of about two inches. This species feeds voraciously on the leaves of a wide range of deciduous tree species, which can lead to noticeable defoliation in heavily infested areas. The larvae construct silk tents on branches as shelter during molting and resting periods, hence the common name "forest tent caterpillar."
