The endometrial cycle refers to the cyclical changes that occur in the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus, in women of reproductive age. This cycle is regulated by hormonal fluctuations and is crucial for supporting the implantation and development of a fertilized egg.
The endometrial cycle can be divided into two main phases: the proliferative phase and the secretory phase. During the proliferative phase, under the influence of estrogen, the endometrium thickens and develops an increased blood supply. This is essential for preparing the uterus for potential embryo implantation. The proliferative phase is considered the pre-ovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle, occurring in the first half of the cycle.
Following ovulation, the secretory phase begins. This phase is driven by the hormone progesterone, which is secreted by the corpus luteum, a temporary gland formed in the ovary after ovulation. The endometrium becomes more vascularized and glandular, preparing for possible pregnancy. If fertilization of the egg does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, causing a drop in progesterone levels, leading to menstruation. This marks the end of the endometrial cycle, initiating a new round of menstrual flow and the beginning of a new cycle.
