The cardiac cycle refers to the complete sequence of events that occur during one heartbeat. It encompasses the mechanical and electrical activities of the heart that result in the contraction and relaxation of its chambers, leading to the pumping of blood through the cardiovascular system.
The cycle begins with the diastole phase, during which the heart is relaxed and the ventricles are passively filling with blood from the atria. The atria contract in atrial systole, pumping the remaining blood into the ventricles, and initiating the next phase.
The ventricles then enter systole, a contraction phase, as the muscles contract forcefully, closing the atrioventricular valves to prevent backflow. This action builds pressure, leading to the opening of the semilunar valves, and enabling the ejection of blood from the heart into the arteries.
After the ejection phase, the ventricles relax in diastole, and the heart chambers refill with blood again, marking the completion of one cardiac cycle. This process repeats continuously to maintain a constant circulation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood throughout the body.
The duration of a typical cardiac cycle varies depending on factors such as heart rate and individual physiological conditions. An average resting heart rate may complete around 60-100 cardiac cycles per minute, while during exercise or stress, the heart rate increases, shortening the duration of each cycle. Understanding the cardiac cycle is vital in diagnosing and treating heart-related conditions.
