The term "belladonna" originated from Italian, meaning "beautiful lady," as the plant's extract was historically used by women to dilate their pupils, giving them a more attractive appearance. However, the use of belladonna alkaloids is now primarily restricted to pharmaceutical applications due to their potential toxicity.
Belladonna alkaloids include compounds such as atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine, among others. These alkaloids have anticholinergic properties, meaning they competitively inhibit the action of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine at certain receptors in the body. This inhibition leads to various physiological and pharmacological effects, including pupil dilation, decreased secretion of sweat, saliva, and gastric acid, relaxation of smooth muscles, and reduced gastrointestinal motility.
In medicine, belladonna alkaloids are commonly used to treat intestinal spasms, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers, and excessive secretions in respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis. They may also be employed preoperatively to reduce salivation and bronchial secretions and as an adjunctive therapy for bradycardia (slow heart rate).
However, due to their potential adverse effects, such as blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation, and increased heart rate, belladonna alkaloids should be used cautiously and under medical supervision. Additionally, as the name suggests, these compounds are toxic when ingested in large quantities and can be potentially life-threatening.
