Aujeszkys Disease, also known as Pseudorabies or mad itch, is an acute and highly contagious viral infection that affects various species of animals, especially pigs, but can also transmit to other mammals such as cattle, dogs, cats, and even humans. The disease is caused by the Herpesvirus suid 1, a member of the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily.
The virus primarily affects the central nervous system, resulting in severe neurological symptoms in infected animals. The most common signs include intense itching, muscle tremors, high temperature, labored breathing, excessive salivation, vomiting, and convulsions. These symptoms usually progress rapidly and can ultimately lead to paralysis and death.
Aujeszkys Disease is primarily transmitted through direct contact with infected animals, typically through saliva, respiratory secretions, or by eating contaminated tissues. The virus can also spread indirectly through contact with contaminated surfaces such as feeders, equipment, or clothing. In addition, the disease can be transmitted through the ingestion of infected meat or products derived from infected animals.
