Allocebus is a taxonomic genus within the primate family Cheirogaleidae, commonly known as dwarf lemurs. This small-sized genus consists of two species, Allocebus trichotis and Allocebus murinus, which are native to Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world. The Allocebus genus is characterized by its small body size, ranging from 11 to 14 centimeters in length, and a distinctive color pattern with a dark dorsal stripe running along the back.
These species are arboreal and primarily inhabit the tropical rainforests and deciduous forests of Madagascar. They are nocturnal, using their sharp nails and a specialized tooth comb to groom their fur and forage for food during the night. Allocebus lemurs have a varied diet, consisting mainly of fruits, nectar, flowers, and small invertebrates, which they obtain by leaping among tree branches.
Although Allocebus lemurs share some similarities with other dwarf lemurs in terms of morphology and behavior, they are unique in their own right. They are known for their large eyes, which aid in their nocturnal lifestyle and exceptional vision in low-light conditions.
