Akmola, also known as Nur-Sultan, is the capital city of Kazakhstan. Located in the northern part of the country, it is situated on the banks of the Ishim River. Akmola is a significant political, economic, and cultural center of Kazakhstan.
The name "Akmola" translates to "white grave" in Kazakh, reflecting the region's snowy climate during winter. The city was founded in 1830 as a Russian fortification post and served as a trading center between Central Asia and Siberia. It later became the administrative center of the Turgay region in 1868.
Following Kazakhstan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Akmola was designated as the new capital in 1997, replacing Almaty. The decision was made due to its central location within the country and it being closer to Russia, which provided better strategic and geopolitical advantages. The city was renamed Nur-Sultan in 2019 in honor of the former President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
