Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) is a high-speed point-to-point channel that facilitates the direct connection between a computer's motherboard and its graphics card. It is specifically designed to enhance the performance of graphics-heavy applications and tasks on a personal computer.
AGP was first introduced by Intel in 1997 as an alternative to the traditional Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus for graphics cards. This interface was primarily aimed at supporting fast data transfer rates between the graphics card and the computer's memory. AGP significantly improves the graphics rendering capabilities of a computer by enabling higher frame rates, higher resolutions, and smoother video playback.
The AGP interface operates at a higher clock speed than traditional PCI, with AGP 1x providing a transfer rate of 266 MB/s, AGP 2x offering 533 MB/s, and AGP 4x reaching up to 1 GB/s. AGP 8x, the final revision of the interface, doubles the bandwidth of AGP 4x to 2 GB/s.
AGP slots on motherboards are physically similar to PCI slots but are typically colored brown in order to differentiate them. The graphics card is connected to the AGP slot using an AGP connector, and the card itself contains the necessary interface circuitry to communicate with the computer system.
While AGP has been largely superseded by newer interfaces such as PCI Express, its introduction marked a significant milestone in improving graphics performance on personal computers, contributing to the evolution of modern gaming and multimedia experiences.
