The urethra is commonly defined as a narrow tube-like structure in the human body that connects the urinary bladder to the external opening at the end of the genitalia in both males and females. Its primary function is to transport urine from the bladder to the outside of the body, allowing for its excretion. In males, the urethra also plays a role in the reproductive system, facilitating the ejaculation of semen during sexual intercourse.
The length and structure of the urethra differ between males and females. In males, the urethra is longer and passes through the prostate gland and penis. It is divided into three sections: the prostatic urethra, the membranous urethra, and the spongy or penile urethra. On the other hand, the female urethra is shorter and directly opens into the vestibule, an area between the labia minora.
While its primary function is to facilitate the excretion of urine, the urethra can also be susceptible to infections such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These infections can cause discomfort, pain, or difficulties in urination. In some cases, medical intervention may be required to treat the underlying condition.
Overall, the urethra holds significant importance in the urinary and reproductive systems, permitting the passage of urine and, in males, semen.
