Parapsoriasis is a medical term derived from the Greek words "para" meaning beside or closely resembling, and "psoriasis" referring to a chronic skin disorder. This condition is classified as a group of uncommon chronic dermatological disorders that share similarities in clinical and histopathological features with psoriasis, but have distinctive characteristics that set them apart as separate entities.
Parapsoriasis typically presents as scaly red patches or plaques on the skin that may be itchy and can occur anywhere on the body. The affected areas often do not have the well-defined borders seen in classical psoriasis, and may appear more generalized or irregularly shaped. While it resembles psoriasis, it generally lacks the thick silvery scales commonly associated with the latter.
There are different subtypes of parapsoriasis, including parapsoriasis en plaque and small plaque parapsoriasis, which have varying clinical presentations and patterns of progression. These conditions are often chronic and may persist for several years, but they are considered benign and generally do not progress to more severe forms.
The exact cause of parapsoriasis is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Diagnosis usually involves a thorough clinical examination, medical history assessment, and skin biopsy.
