Partnership with NSERC

Matrikon collaborates with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Engineering through a research chair Matrikon sponsors, the NSERC-Matrikon-ASRA Senior Industrial Research Chair in Computer Process Control.[3]

The technology developed through this collaboration includes a computerized sensing program for Syncrude called “Dirt TV,” which monitors lumps of ore moving through an oil sands plant and warns operators of any large ore chunks that can jam the machinery and stall operations. [4]

Through NSERC, Matrikon has also worked with Univeristy of Alberta researchers and Suncor to help Suncor reduce the amount of toxic bitumen entering tailings ponds. The resulting technology, which improved bitumen recovery in separation cells, cut the amount of bitumen entering tailings ponds by 50 per cent.[5]

History

Matrikon was founded in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada in 1988 by Nizar J. Somji, the company’s current president and CEO. Matrikon expanded its operations to the United States in 1999, to Australia in 2002, to Germany and the United Kingdom in 2004, and to Bahrain in 2006. The company acquired TigrSoft in a reverse takeover bid and became publicly traded in 2001. In 2008, Matrikon created a joint venture with India’s SoftDEL Systems to create Matrikon-SoftDEL India.
