The Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan , forms a part of the league along with eight new IITs proposed by the MHRD, Government of India.
The seven old IITs are located in Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, and Roorkee. With the plan to setup eight more IITs in the states of Rajasthan, Bihar (Patna), Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad), Himachal Pradesh (Mandi), Orissa (Bhubaneshwar), Madhya Pradesh (Indore), Gujarat (Gandhinagar) and Punjab (Rupnagar), the total number of IITs will be increased to 15.

History
This new institute was established by MHRD, Govt.of India in year 2008. The classes for first academic session held at IIT Kanpur, which had been designated as the mentor IIT for looking after the incubation activities of the new IIT in Rajasthan. The first academic session in IIT Rajasthan commenced in August 2008.
Following the recommendations of a high-power committee headed by Prof Vijay Shankar Vyas, both the Rajasthan state government and MHRD have approved Jodhpur as the city where IIT Rajasthan will be set up. The final approval came in the month of November 2009. Since then the state government and IIT Rajasthan administration have been working towards making a smooth shift of IIT Rajasthan from its temporary camp at Kanpur to its permanent establishment at Jodhpur. IIT Rajasthan will be located about 22 km from Jodhpur city on National Highway 65 which connects Jodhpur to Nagaur. The IIT site would be sprawling about 900 acres of land around Jhipasni and Gharao villages. The construction of the fully residential campus of IIT Rajasthan is expected to start in the later part of 2010.
For the next two years, IIT Rajasthan will have its academic and administrative block in the MBM Engineering College, Ratanada, Jodhpur. All the students and faculty will be having their new addresses in Jodhpur by July 2010. For IIT Rajasthan the "wait" in site selection has been the longest of all new IITs.

MHRD was not impressed with Kota citing lack of airport and being a Mecca for JEE coaching. MHRD minister Arjun Singh asks for other alternative locations for housing IIT Rajasthan. The matter keeps pending as Raje did not propose any alternative. |
| December 2008: Assembly elections in Rajasthan. Congress comes to power under leadership of Mr. Ashok Gehlot. Rajasthan gets a new chief minister. |
| January 2009: Gehlot appoints a high-powered committee under chairmanship of Vijay Shankar Vyas (Ex-director IIM Ahmedabad) to suggest alternative locations for IIT Rajasthan. The committee was asked to submit the report in a month. The committee tours Bikaner, Ajmer, Kota, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur. |
| May 12, 2009: The committee submits its report to the State Government. The committee favours Jodhpur for IIT, Udaipur for IIM, Jaipur for Central University, Ajmer for World Class University. |
| June 2009: The state government forwards the report to the Central Government. |
| October 2009: MHRD sends experts to visit the suggested location for IIT at Jodhpur. MBM Engineering college, Jodhpur is identified as the temporary campus of IIT Jodhpur. |

| February 27, 2010: An MoU is signed by IIT Rajasthan and JNV University Jodhpur, for providing a part of the college campus for conducting IIT Rajasthan classes for 2 years. The same day the foundation stone was laid at the MBM Engineering college for constructing new buildings. |

Academic programs
IIT Jodhpur currently offers undergraduate programs in three disciplines:
- Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering
- Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering
- Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering
Admission to these programmes is through the JEE and forty students in each branch are admitted after completing 10+2 schooling.
