The binturong, also known as the bearcat, is a large and distinctive mammal primarily found in Southeast Asia. It is a member of the Viverridae family and belongs to the order Carnivora, although it primarily feeds on fruits and has a predominantly herbivorous diet.
Physically, the binturong possesses unique characteristics that set it apart. It has a stocky build with a long, prehensile tail that can be used for climbing and grasping branches. The fur is coarse and shaggy, ranging in color from blackish-brown to dark gray. One particularly notable feature is its face, which bears resemblances to both a bear and a cat, hence its alternative name.
Habitat-wise, the binturong prefers living amidst the dense forests of its range, including tropical rainforests and mountainous regions. It is mainly nocturnal, remaining active during the night while spending its days resting in the trees. Its strong grip and agility allow it to be an adept climber, often relying on its tail for balance and stability.
Although classified as primarily frugivorous, the binturong also consumes a varied diet consisting of eggs, small mammals, birds, and even leaves. The binturong employs a unique scent gland located near its anus to mark its territory and communicate with other individuals.
Due to loss of habitat and poaching, the binturong is considered vulnerable and faces significant population decline. Conservation efforts have been put forth to protect this remarkable mammal and preserve its natural habitat.

The word "binturong" originated from the Malay language. In Malay, the animal is called "binturung" or "manturong". The term is believed to have been derived from two words: "binatang" meaning "animal", and "turing" meaning "climber".
